1． 作定語的句子叫定語從句。定語從句通常置於它所修飾的名詞或代詞之後，這種名詞或代詞叫做先行詞。新到定語從句的關聯詞為關係代詞或關係副詞。
關係代詞在定語從句中可作主語、賓語、定語等；關係副詞在定語從句中只作狀語。
2． 用作關聯次的關係代詞有who, whom, whose, that, which等。who, whom, whose指人。who是主格，在從句中用作主語；whom是賓格，在從句中用做賓語；whose是所屬格，用做定語。
如： the man who was here yesterday is a doctor.昨天在這的那個人是位醫生。
注意● that在定語從句中既可作主語，也可作賓語，既可指人，也可指物，但多指物。如：the letter that i received from him yesterday is very important.
昨天他來的信很重要。
● which在定語從句中既可用做主語，也可用做賓語，一般都指物。如：where is the book which i bought this morning?
今天上午我買的那本書在哪兒？
● 先行詞指人時，關係代詞既可用who，也可用that。 但關係代詞在句中用做主語時，多用主格who.如：
all who heard the story were amazed.聽到這個故事的人都感到吃驚。
● 先行詞前面有形容詞最高端，序數詞或only等詞修飾時應用that。如：it was the largest map that i ever saw.
那時我所見過的最大的地圖。
● 當定語從句的先行詞中同時含有人和物時，只能用that.
3. 用作關聯詞的關係副詞有when, where, why等。 when在句中作時間狀語，其先行詞是表示時間的名詞。
where在從句中作地點狀語，其先行詞是表示地點的名詞。why 在句中作原因狀語，先行詞通常是 reason. 如：
she came on the day when i was not at home.她來的那天我不在家。 this is the place where i grew up.
這裡是我成長的地方。 that』s the reason why she likes him. 那就是她喜歡他的原因。
