瑪麗亞到達馮·特拉普家，發現他是乙個有七個孩子的鰥夫，長期的海軍生活和亡妻的悲傷使他對待孩子像管教士兵一樣嚴格。很快，瑪麗亞就明白了以前那些家庭教師離開的原因，原來是孩子們得不到父親的關愛，總是用捉弄教師來吸引父親的注意。

上校要求瑪麗亞也像他一樣嚴格，但是瑪麗亞沒有聽從，而是用她天生的溫柔和善良贏得了孩子們的友好。趁上校不在的時候，她用窗簾給每個孩子縫製了遊戲服裝，帶領他們到市場遊玩，在美麗的阿爾卑斯山上野餐，還教會了他們唱歌。孩子們原有的拘禁和憂鬱漸漸地被**和笑聲代替了。
