英語句子的基本語序是主語在前，謂語動詞在後(the natural order)，當語序顛倒時就成了倒裝結構(the inverted order)。把謂語的全部放在主語之前稱為完全倒裝；而只把助動詞或情態動詞放在主語之前，則稱為部分倒裝。
倒裝的分類
1 部分倒裝partial inversion---主語與助動詞/情態動詞/系動詞倒裝
h**e i heard such a thing.= i h**e never heard such a thing.
結構2 全部倒裝full inversion---主語與謂語動詞倒裝
fell the rain.= the rain fell down.
結構全部倒裝句：
1.表示的副詞如：here, there, now, then, thus，out，away, up, down等副詞置於句首, 謂語動詞常用be, come, go, lie, run。
當其主語為名詞時，通常要使用倒裝。
例如：a. there goes the bellb. then came the chairman
c. here is your letterd. away went the boy to the school!
e. off goes the woman!
注意：上述全部倒裝的句型結構的主語必須是如果主語是人稱代詞則_______能倒裝。
例如：here he comes. away they went.
2. 以引導詞開頭的句子，須使用倒裝結構，除 there be 外還有there live / stand / lie / exist等。例如：
a. there are three books on the desk．
b. there lived an old fisherman near the sea.
c. there stands a tall building in the centre of the town.
3做地點狀語放在句首, 也用全部倒裝。
a. in the cottage lives a family of six.
b. near the bridge was an old cottage.
c. in front of the house sat a little boy.
4的一部分或全部放在句首時，有時也用全部倒裝。
a. 「is it ready yet ?」 asked hu xin.
b. 「try again, watson!」 said holmes.
部分倒裝句:
1. 疑問句
a. h**e you seen the film?
b. when are we going to drink to your happiness?
注意：如疑問詞在句中做則用自然語序。
c. who is your sister?
d. what is our work?
2. so/such...that的so/such位於時。
eg. a. so loudly did the students read that people could hear them out in the street.
b. so small were the words that he could hardly see them.
c. such a famous man he is that everyone wants to take a photo with him.
3．so, neither, nor表示前面所述一件事也適合另乙個人或物時.so用於句, neither/nor 用於句.
a. tom can speak french. so can jack.
b. if you don't go, neither will i.
注意：1)當 so引出的句子用以對上文內容加以證實或肯定時,不可用倒裝結構。意為"的確如此"
tom asked me to go to play football and so i did.
---it『s raining hard.
---so it is.
2)但如果上文所述兩件事也適合另乙個人或物，就用 so it is /was with sb.或it is/was the same with sb.
marx was born in germany and german was his native language. so it was with engels.
4意義的副詞或短語位於句首時，常見的有：never, hardly, seldom, rarely, scarcely, barely, little, not, nowhere, in no way, at no time, by no means, not only, not until(主句倒裝), no sooner等。
eg. a. not until the child fell asleep did the mother le**e the room.
b. hardlycanifollowyou.
c. seldomdoivisitusa.
d. never h**e i seen such a performance .
注意:(1) 如否定詞不在句首不倒裝。
e. i h**e never seen such a performance.
f. the mother didn't le**e the room until the child fell asleep.
(2) not only…but also…在連線兩個並列分句，且not only位於句首時，not only分句倒裝。但若連線兩個並列成分作主語，句子不倒裝。
g. not only is the job boring, but also the workers are poorly paid.
h. not only students but also the teachers are looking forward to the festival.
5. only 位於強調句子的時。
eg. a. only then did i fully understand what my father said.
只有到那時，我才充分理解我父親講的話.
b. only when i left school did i realize how important study is.
只有當我離開學校時，我才意識到學習有多麼重要。
注意: 如果only強調的是句子主語時，不倒裝。
c. only he can help us.
6. 由as或though 引導的讓步狀語從句。
觀察下面兩個例子，總結結構：
十as十
as十 a. young as he is, he knows some of the family.
b. try as i might, i could not lift the stone.
注意：當單數名詞位於句首時，名詞前無冠詞。
c. child as he is, he knows good english.
7. 在條件句中含有would, should, had或were時，可以省略連詞「if」，換成倒裝。如：
a. were i you, i would not do such a thing. = if i were you, i would not do such a thing.
b. would the machine break down again, send it back to us.
= if the machine would break down again, send it back to us.
c. had you worked harder, you would h**e passed.
= if you had worked harder, you would h**e passed.
8. 有些表示等語氣的句子，有時全部倒裝，有時部分倒裝，視句型而定。
a. isn『t it cold! 天氣真冷！
b. may both be happy! 祝你們兩位幸福！
c. may god bless you. 願上帝賜福於你。
d. long live the king! 國王萬歲！
