黃校長，老師們，同學們，
大家好！能夠在西安外事學院二零一一學年開學典禮上致辭，我感到非常榮幸。greetings! university for the year 2011-2012.
今天是乙個特別的日子。無論是對於同學們，家長們，還是老師們來說，今天都是乙個特別的日子。我常常跟我哈佛的同事們說：我們應該感謝學生，因為沒有學生，我們都不會在這裡。
thisisaspecial day. it is aspecialdayforallstudents, and for theirparents. itisaspecialday,too,forthefaculty.
asialwaysusedtotellmy faculty colleagues at harvard: we must always be grateful to thestudents. for without the students, none of us would be here!
當然，要是沒有父母，祖父母，還有他們的親戚朋友的支援，同學們今天也不會來到這個大學。
and, of course, the students would not be here without the parents,grandparents, come to this university.
我尤其要歡迎一年級的新同學。今天是你們高等教育的起點。儘管你們只會在大學
裡呆幾年，但是這幾年將會為你打下作為乙個終身的探索者的基礎。
i particularly want to welcome the first-year students, who are beginninga lifetime of higher education. you will be in college for only a few years,butyouwillbe prepared, during these years, to be apersonwho isa life-longlearner.
哈佛一位前任校長曾經說過，「知識之所以能夠在大學裡積累，是因為新生總為我們帶來許多，而畢業生們卻帶走很少。」但願他的話並不全對。
a former harvard president once said,「knowledge accumulates atuniversitiesbecausethefreshmanbringsomuchin,andtheseniorstakesolittleaway.」i hope he was not entirely correct.
你們能夠來到這裡，的確非常幸運。西安外事學院是中國高等教育復興的前沿。它是私立學校，但又著眼於公共社會，它為你服務，也為你所生活的社會服務。
youareveryfortunateindeedtobehere,atthisplace. xi』aninternationaluniversity is at the forefront of a great revival of higher education inchina. as a private university with a sense of public purpose, it is designedto serve you and to serve the society in which you will live.
這所大學將會為你提供很多的機會。最重要的莫過於學習陳寅恪先生所倡導的「獨立之精神，自由之思想」。你們各自將會有不同的專業，但有一點應該是共通的：
作為學生，你們都會有好奇心，善於反思，敢於懷疑。這些能力將為你們作為乙個終身的探索者打下基礎（我相信你們的第乙份工作一定不會是你們的最後乙份工作）。你們會學會用多元的思維來認識你自己和這個世界；你們畢業的時候，你們將會有真正獨立思考的能力。
這種能力最終將幫助你為社會服務，為家庭服務，最終為你自己服務。this university will offer you many opportunities. the most importantopportunity will be the chance to learn to think independently.
you all willstudymanydifferentsubjects,butwhatyoushouldh**eincommonisthis. you
will want to become curious, reflective, and skeptical learners: people withthe capacity for lifelong learning (for your first job will surely not be yourlast); you will want to develop multiple perspectives on yourselves and on theworld; and by the time you graduate, you will want to be truly independent ofmind. that is how you can best serve your families, your society, and indeedyourselves.
因此，我鼓勵大家不要只是專注於自己的專業學科。大家應該也關心人文學科。我想引用三位哈佛前任校長的話。
nathan pusey校長曾經說到：「乙個專家和專業人士的世界不應該——也不是——乙個沒有人文關懷的世界。」十年前，neilrudenstine校長跟北大的同學說：
「一流的教育是無法用美元和人民幣來衡量的」。他說：「教育鼓勵我們去思考那些沒有經過檢驗的價值和觀點。
還有，哈佛前任校長lawrencesummers說：為什麼大學重要：因為在那裡思想才是真正的權威。
